“As of…” Holly checked her watch and peered back out the bakery window at Elspeth’s pop-up shop. “…five minutes ago, we are mob free, and I can report there were no flaming torches thrown. All in all, a good result.”

“Except for all the people slashed and chased by killer Christmas toys, the petting zoo set loose down Main Street, and Santa’s sleigh stolen and burned out.” Xandie slumped in her chair, a morose look upon her face. “Why can’t we just have a normal Christmas with no blood spilled or bodies found?”

“Because we ain’t that lucky and we’re related to Elspeth.” Lila put her feet up on a chair and groaned. “It’s surprising how many people get the munchies when they are running away from vicious killer toys.”

Harry, Holly’s cursed raven, opened his beak wide in a bone-cracking yawn. “I, for one, am disappointed. Flaming torches remind me of home.”

“And the mob?” Holly poked the feathery stomach of the raven.

“Eh.” The sometimes taxidermy bird shrugged, feathers rippling. “Once you’ve seen one mob, you’ve seen them all.”

Xandie sat upright, stiffening her spine. “We need to forget the mob and work out who’s doing this before we all end up sliced and diced by rabid Christmas decorations. We need to work out our next move.”

“I think our next move might be coming through the door right now.” Holly pressed her nose up against the bakery window. “And it doesn’t look happy.”

The door to the bakery slammed open, and disheveled-looking Zach and Liam stood framed in the doorway, their uniforms covered in soot and questionable dark stains.

Xandie slapped a hand over her nose as a putrid organic stench wafted over. “Geez, honey. What have you been rolling in?”

Zach held up a finger. “Do not talk. No Harrows talking right now. Just follow.” The police chief spun, nearly taking out a stone-faced Liam Harrow.

Exchanging a glance with her cousins, Xandie stood. “Okay, sweetie. Whatever you need.” She raised an eyebrow at Lila and Holly. “You guys coming?”

Holly bounded to her feet, yanking Harry to her chest. “The baker can stay behind for once.”

Lila shrugged and waved the girls off. “Feel free. I’m heading upstairs to my apartment for a mayhem free bubble bath.”

“Shotgun.” Holly bolted past Xandie.

Judging by her bear shifter hubby’s unimpressed face, fun and lovey-dovey activities weren’t in the cards…

Xandie winced as Zach pulled to a screeching stop in front of a scaffold-covered Hart Cottage. “Can we talk now?”

The police chief blew out a breath. “Sorry, it’s been a day.”

“You know it’s bad when the cops get covered in unmentionable dark patches.” Holly screwed up her nose. “I guess the runaway petting zoo put up a fight?”

Liam closed his amber eyes and shuddered. “The less said about the petting zoo and their bowel habits, the better.”

“Getting off bowel habits, can I ask why we are at Hart Cottage? Mad Hart threw us off her land yesterday, so I don’t think she’ll be happy to see us again.”

“Technically,” Holly corrected her cousin, “you and Lila left under your own steam.
